How oven failures usually play out
Short answer: Oven failures are either heat problems or control problems. No heat on electric usually means a burned bake element or a failed relay on the control board. On gas, it is the igniter nine times out of ten. Uneven baking points to a weak element, a bad temperature sensor, or a convection fan that quit.
The call we get most is the oven that preheats forever or never reaches temperature. When we open it up, what we actually find on electric models is a bake element with a visible blister or break, sometimes with a scorch mark on the oven floor to prove it. On gas ovens, the igniter glows but never gets hot enough to open the gas valve, so the oven just sits there. Both are classic wear parts, and both are same-visit fixes.
Holiday cooking season is our busiest time for ovens, and it is also when weak parts finally give out. An element that limped along all year fails on Thanksgiving morning. We also see control boards damaged by spring storm surges in homes around Wades Grove and Buckner Crossing: the display works, but the board will not send power to the element. If your stove burners are acting up too, mention it, since ranges share controls. More about us is on our Spring Hill appliance repair team home page.
Oven symptoms we fix
If any of these sound familiar, it is worth a call. A quick diagnosis now usually costs less than the damage a failing appliance does later.
01. Oven will not heat at all
Burned bake element, failed igniter on gas, or a control board relay that quit. We test the element and igniter with a meter before touching the board.
02. Takes forever to preheat or never reaches temp
Weak element, failing temperature sensor, or a convection fan that stopped. We check the sensor reading against a thermometer.
03. Bakes unevenly, burns one side
Bad temperature sensor, dead convection fan, or a warped rack setup. We verify actual cavity temperature in multiple spots.
04. Display is dark or controls do not respond
Often storm-surge board damage or a tripped thermal fuse. We check power and the fuse before recommending a board.
What Spring Hill ovens go through
Builder-grade electric ranges went into most new Wades Grove and Harvest Point homes, and those bake elements are now hitting the age where they fail. In Buckner Crossing, where kitchens run 15 to 20 years old, we see more control board and sensor failures, plus gas igniters wearing out on the gas ranges common in that area.
Storm season deserves a mention. The same surges that kill refrigerator boards take out oven controls. If your oven misbehaves after an outage along Saturn Pkwy or Duplex Rd, tell us. It is a different diagnostic path than a worn-out element, and it matters for the estimate.
We run calls daily in Wades Grove and Buckner Crossing and across Spring Hill ZIPs 37174 and 37179.

Common oven problems and our fixes
| Symptom | Usual cause | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| No heat (electric) | Burned bake element or failed board relay | Test element, replace if open; test relay output if element is good |
| No heat (gas) | Weak igniter not opening gas valve | Test igniter amperage, replace igniter, verify ignition |
| Slow preheat / low temp | Weak element, bad temp sensor | Compare sensor reading to thermometer, replace the failed part |
| Uneven baking | Dead convection fan, bad sensor | Test fan motor and sensor, replace whichever failed |
| Dead display / no response | Surge-damaged board, tripped thermal fuse | Check power and fuse first, then board |
Repair the oven or replace the range?
Ovens are very often worth fixing:
Element, igniter, or sensor failure
Repair: $100 to $250 fixes that restore full function
Single board relay failure on a newer oven
Repair: Board replacement beats $1,000+ for a new range
Multiple board failures on a 15+ year unit
Replace: Chasing electrical gremlins gets expensive fast
Cavity rusted through or door glass shattered (parts NLA)
Replace: Structural and unobtainable-part issues end the discussion
