What is actually wrong with your disposal
Short answer: Garbage disposal problems are almost always one of three things: a jam from something hard stuck in the grinding chamber, a tripped reset button or failed motor, or a leak from a worn seal or loose connection. Jams and resets take minutes. A seized motor means replacement, which we also handle.
The call we get most is the disposal that hums loudly but does not spin. When we look inside, what we actually find is usually a bone fragment, a fruit pit, or a piece of silverware wedged between the impeller plate and the grind ring. We kill the power, work it free with the hex wrench from underneath, hit the reset button, and it runs like new. That whole visit is often the cheapest service call we do.
Leaks are the second call, and they need a real look. Water under the sink can come from the disposal's own seals, the dishwasher drain connection, or the sink flange above it. We trace it with the water running before we name a part. In Buckner Crossing homes at 15 to 20 years old, we see original builder disposals with rusted-out housings: at that point replacement beats repair and we will say so. If your dishwasher is not draining either, the two share a drain path and we check both. More about us is on our main appliance repair page.
Disposal symptoms and what they mean
If any of these sound familiar, it is worth a call. A quick diagnosis now usually costs less than the damage a failing appliance does later.
01. Humming but not spinning
Something is jammed in the grinding chamber. Turn it off, never reach inside, and call. We free the jam and reset the unit.
02. Completely dead, no sound at all
Tripped reset button, tripped breaker, or a seized motor. We check the reset and power first before talking replacement.
03. Water leaking under the sink
Worn internal seals, loose drain connection, or a rusted housing. We trace the leak with water running to find the true source.
04. Bad smell that will not go away
Food trapped in the splash guard and grind chamber. We clean it out and show you the 30-second maintenance that prevents it.
Disposals in Spring Hill kitchens
Builder-grade 1/3 horsepower disposals went into most new Harvest Point homes, and those small motors jam more easily and wear out faster than the 3/4 horsepower units we recommend as replacements. When we replace one, we upsize the motor and check the whole under-sink drain setup, including the dishwasher connection, so you are not calling us back in a year.
Hard water plays a role here too. Mineral scale builds up in the grind chamber and on the splash guard in homes across Maury and Williamson counties, which is part of why disposals here get noisy and smelly faster. Running cold water for 15 seconds after grinding and tossing in ice cubes monthly keeps the chamber clean. It is free and it works.
We run calls daily in Buckner Crossing and Harvest Point and across Spring Hill ZIPs 37174 and 37179.

Repair the disposal or replace it?
Disposals are inexpensive, so the line is clear:
Simple jam or tripped reset
Repair: Minutes of work, minimal cost
Leaking from a connection or flange
Repair: Resealing is cheap and effective
Seized motor or rusted-through housing
Replace: A new 3/4 HP unit installed is the smart money
Builder-grade 1/3 HP that keeps jamming
Replace: Upsizing the motor ends the repeat calls
