What actually goes wrong with washing machines
Short answer: Washing machine failures fall into three buckets: water problems (will not fill, will not drain, or leaks), mechanical problems (will not spin, shakes violently, or makes grinding noise), and control problems (will not start or stops mid-cycle). We test the inlet valves, drain pump, lid switch or door lock, and suspension before replacing anything.
The call we get most is the washer that fills and agitates but leaves everything sopping wet. When we open it up, what we actually find is usually a worn drain pump that cannot push water out fast enough, or a lid switch on a top-loader that broke so the machine never enters spin. On front-loaders in newer Wades Grove homes, it is often the door lock assembly: the machine thinks the door is open and refuses to spin.
January cold snaps cause a special kind of washer call here. Washers in garages along Beechcroft Rd or in unheated laundry additions can get a frozen drain hose after a hard freeze, and the machine errors out or floods when it thaws. And our limestone hard water is rough on inlet valves and leaves residue that makes front-loader seals smell. If the dryer is struggling too, tell us, because laundry pairs often fail from the same water and vent conditions. More about how we work is on our Spring Hill home page.
Washer symptoms that mean call us
If any of these sound familiar, it is worth a call. A quick diagnosis now usually costs less than the damage a failing appliance does later.
01. Will not spin, clothes come out dripping
Broken lid switch or door lock, worn drive belt, or a control that never sends the spin signal. We test each in order instead of guessing.
02. Water on the floor around the washer
Split drain hose, loose inlet connection, worn door boot on front-loaders, or an over-sudsing detergent issue. We find the source and run a full cycle to confirm the fix.
03. Shakes violently or walks across the floor
Worn suspension rods or shock absorbers, an unbalanced load habit, or a machine that was never leveled. Suspension parts are a common mid-life repair on 8 to 12 year old top-loaders.
04. Grinding, squealing, or loud banging
Worn bearings, something caught between the tubs, or a failing drain pump. Bearing noise on a front-loader is the one we are most honest about: it can cost enough to justify replacement.
Cold snaps, hard water, and garage laundry rooms
Spring Hill laundry setups vary a lot by neighborhood. In Wades Grove and Brixworth, washers sit in proper laundry rooms, and we see the standard mid-life failures: pumps, valves, door locks. Out toward older pockets and garage setups near Main St and Columbia Pike, January freezes are the story: frozen drain hoses, cracked inlet valves, and machines that error out until the thaw.
Hard water is the slow killer. Limestone minerals scale inlet valves until they stick open or closed, and leave the film that makes front-loader door boots smell musty. If your washer is in a humid garage or basement, leave the door ajar between loads. It is the simplest free fix we recommend on every front-loader call.
We run calls daily in Wades Grove and Brixworth and across Spring Hill ZIPs 37174 and 37179.

Common washing machine problems and our fixes
| Symptom | Usual cause | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Will not drain | Clogged or worn drain pump, blocked hose | Clear the path or replace the pump, verify full drain and spin |
| Will not spin | Bad lid switch/door lock, worn belt, control issue | Test switch and lock first, replace the failed part |
| Leaking water | Split hose, worn door boot, loose inlet valve | Find the source, replace hose/boot/valve, run test cycle |
| Violent shaking | Worn suspension rods or shocks, unlevel machine | Replace suspension set, level and calibrate the machine |
| Loud grinding in spin | Worn tub bearings or object between tubs | Inspect; honest repair-vs-replace math if bearings are shot |
Repair the washer or replace it?
Washers are worth fixing more often than people think, with one big exception:
Pump, valve, belt, or switch failure under 10 years
Repair: $100 to $250 fixes that add years of reliable service
Suspension rods worn on a top-loader
Repair: Common mid-life fix, straightforward and worth it
Front-loader tub bearings failed
Replace: Bearing jobs run $400+, usually more than the washer is worth
Multiple failures plus rust on the cabinet
Replace: The machine is telling you it is done
