Why dryers stop heating

Short answer: A dryer that tumbles without heat has a break somewhere in the heating circuit: a burned-out element, a tripped thermal fuse, a failed thermostat, or on gas models, bad igniter or coils. We test the circuit with a meter rather than swapping parts blindly, and most no-heat calls are fixed in one visit.

The call we get most is: the dryer runs, the drum turns, but the clothes come out damp and cool. When we open it up, what we actually find on electric models is usually a heating element with a visible break or a thermal fuse that tripped because the vent is packed with lint. On gas dryers, it is the igniter or the gas valve coils nine times out of ten. Either way, the fix is a tested part replacement, not a new dryer.

Long vent runs are a Spring Hill thing. In two-story homes in Cherry Grove and Harvest Point, the dryer often vents up and across the house, and lint builds up in those long runs until airflow chokes. Weak airflow overheats the machine, trips the thermal fuse, and doubles dry times. If your dryer takes two cycles, check the outside vent flap first: if it barely opens, airflow is your problem. We also service the washing machine when laundry pairs fail together. More about us is on Quick Air Fix, your local appliance repair team.

Dryer problems we see every week

If any of these sound familiar, it is worth a call. A quick diagnosis now usually costs less than the damage a failing appliance does later.

01. Drum turns but no heat

Burned element, tripped thermal fuse, bad thermostat, or failed igniter/coils on gas. We meter the whole heating circuit to find the break.

02. Takes two cycles to dry

Restricted vent airflow is the top cause, then a weak element or failing thermostat. We check the vent path and the heat output.

03. Dryer will not start at all

Broken belt switch, bad door switch, failed thermal fuse, or no power from a tripped breaker. We check power first, then the switches.

04. Loud thumping or squealing

Worn drum rollers, idler pulley, or a belt about to snap. Roller kits are a classic mid-life repair and much cheaper than a new dryer.

Long vents and lint: the Spring Hill dryer pattern

Newer two-story homes in Harvest Point and Cherry Grove often have dryer vents that run 15 to 25 feet with bends. Those runs collect lint, airflow drops, and the dryer overheats until the thermal fuse gives up. We see this constantly. A vent cleaning plus the fuse replacement solves it, but the vent needs attention or it will happen again.

There is a safety angle worth saying plainly: lint-packed vents and overheating dryers are a real fire risk, and we find dangerous vent setups every month. If your laundry room smells hot or the top of the dryer is too hot to touch, stop using it and call. That is not a nuisance, it is a hazard.

We run calls daily in Cherry Grove and Harvest Point and across Spring Hill ZIPs 37174 and 37179.

Common dryer problems and our fixes

Symptom Usual cause What we do
No heat, drum turns Broken element, tripped fuse, bad thermostat/igniter Meter the circuit, replace the failed part, verify heat output
Long dry times Clogged vent, weak element Check vent airflow, test element, clean or replace as needed
Will not start Door switch, belt switch, thermal fuse, breaker Check power, test switches, replace the failed one
Loud thumping/squealing Worn rollers, idler pulley, failing belt Replace roller/pulley kit, inspect belt
Shuts off mid-cycle Overheating from blocked vent, bad motor Clear vent, test motor windings, replace if failed

Fix the dryer or replace it?

Dryers are simple and usually worth fixing:

Element, fuse, thermostat, or roller failure

Repair: $100 to $250 fixes on machines under 12 years almost always pay off

Gas valve coils or igniter failed

Repair: Straightforward parts, big savings over replacement

Motor failed on a 12+ year dryer

Replace: Motor plus labor approaches the price of a new basic dryer

Drum cracked or cabinet rusted through

Replace: Structural failure is not worth chasing

Frequently Asked Questions

Real answers to the questions Spring Hill homeowners ask us most about dryer repair.

Why is my dryer not heating up but the drum still turns?
The motor circuit and the heat circuit are separate, so the drum can turn fine while heat is dead. On electric dryers the heating element is usually burned out or the thermal fuse tripped from a clogged vent. On gas dryers it is the igniter or gas valve coils. We test the circuit with a meter to find the exact break.
Why does my dryer take two cycles to dry clothes?
Weak airflow, almost always. Lint packed in a long vent run chokes the hot air out, so moisture stays in. Check that the outside vent flap opens fully while it runs. If it barely moves, the vent needs cleaning. A weak heating element is the second most common cause.
How much does dryer repair cost?
Most dryer repairs run $100 to $300. Elements, fuses, thermostats, igniters, and roller kits all fall in that range. We give a free estimate and an upfront price before starting, so you know the number before we touch anything.
Is a dryer that overheats dangerous?
Yes, it can be. Overheating from a blocked vent is a genuine fire risk, and lint is the fuel. If the top of the dryer is very hot, the laundry room smells scorched, or it shuts off mid-cycle from overheating, stop using it and call. We treat these as priority calls.
Do you repair gas dryers as well as electric?
Yes, both. Gas dryers add the igniter, gas valve coils, and flame sensor to the checklist, and we test them the same methodical way. If you ever smell gas around the dryer, leave the area and call your gas utility first, then call us.
